Es war bei ihm zunächst Hepatitis C, später Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs diagnostiziert worden. Am 6. August 2009 verstarb er in einem Krankenhaus in New York. Es war Wunsch des Künstlers, auf Hepatitis C und die möglichen Behandlungserfolge bei frühzeitiger Erkennung aufmerksam zu machen
