On January 14, 2005, it was announced that phpBB 2.2 would be no more. It was decided that due to the large scale changes in the code, and the lack of backward compatibility, it would be best re-numbered phpBB 3.0.0, as is required under the Linux Kernal numbering system. phpBB 3.0.0 would from now on also be referred to as “Olympus”.
